On a cold winter’s day in November of 1955, a C-54 Air Force transport plane was flying a top secret mission over Nevada. It had taken off from the Lockheed Skunk Works in Burbank, transporting support staff for the second test flight of the U-2 spy plane to what we know know as Area 51. Flight 9068 was blown off course and had to remain under radio silence as this was the single most top secret project at an area that did not exist. Trying to correct it’s course, it flew west up Kyle Canyon and almost made it over Mount Charleston. It crashed just below the top of the mountain, taking all 14 souls including Air Force Personnel, CIA and Lockheed.
Two years ago The Silent Heroes Of The Cold War Memorial was dedicated at the USFS Kyle Canyon visitor’s center and this coming Veterans Day on Sunday, members of the committee including ex-CIA types will be at the memorial from 10AM to 2PM on Sunday to give tours and answer questions.
